This Halloween, the gymnasium of Austin High turned into a neon-lit world, as that week’s pep rally had the twist of being glow-in-the-dark! As students wore neon colors and glowing accessories, the atmosphere was full of excitement. The gymnasium, decorated with fluorescent decorations, set the stage for a lively celebration of school spirit and cultural heritage. However, when the Ballet Folklórico took the stage, it was clear that the event would be something to remember.
In a Veracruz dress and candles on their heads, the dancers illuminated the room with their graceful performance. Under the black lights, their beautiful outfits radiated, adding an extra quality to the performance. The rhythmic beats of classic Mexican folk music filled the air, inviting everyone to join in the experience.
Students, parents, and faculty filled the bleachers, clapping and cheering as the dancers performed lively routines. The performance not only showcased the beauty and richness of Mexican culture but also bridged the gap between traditions and contemporary expressions, making it relatable to the diverse Austin High community.
“I think it’s really fun to show the school our culture,” said senior Mia Gutierrez-Villarreal. “I think at school, it’s more of a representation for the other half. I feel very prideful and awesome sauce!”
“Dancing has for sure made me more of a person who values community,” said senior Folklorico dancer Katherine Ortega. “ Doing Ballet Folklorico, to me, means honoring our culture, our ancestors, and the people who came to Mexico. We try to keep traditions alive by learning the history behind the songs and routines.”
As the rally progressed, the glowing performances continued to captivate the audience, with a final group number that invited the audience members to join in. With glowing candles in the air, and the spirit of community running high, the Halloween pep rally was a clear success.
With their vibrant display of talent and pride, the Ballet Folklórico group left a beautiful mark on the hearts of Austin High and reminded everyone of the beauty of cultural diversity—one glow at a time.
