Regardless of whether you are a freshman or senior, one thing all high school students all have in common is the fact that within the next five years, we will all be graduating and needing to find a career that we enjoy. Whether or not you decide on going to college, having a job that you enjoy is crucial to retaining good mental health. Deciding what field of work you want to get into can be daunting, especially as a freshman, but don’t fret; nothing has to be set in stone. It is, however, smart to get a general idea of what field of work best fits your lifestyle, so you don’t feel too overwhelmed while looking for a job that suits you, or choosing what to major in during college.
There are tons of resources out there to help you choose what career might suit you best. One popular choice among students all over the U.S is to partake in online quizzes that ask you various questions about your work ethic, personality, and hobbies and automatically narrow down a job for you that best fits you. These quizzes are accessible to anyone with a stable internet connection, and many are posted by colleges on their own websites. However, most of these quizzes tend to be very short, and can be somewhat inaccurate.
Another more pricey, but beneficial choice is paying for someone to be your career counselor. Career counselors are not free, however they are an amazing option for those who want to consult someone who is knowledgeable about what work ethics and personality types is best in certain careers.
At the end of the day, however, only you can decide which path is best for you. It is important to consider what your priorities are when choosing a career after high school. Do you want to find a career that has the highest average salary? Or maybe you want to find a job that you simply enjoy doing, and the pay doesn’t matter. Do you want to go to college/school that specializes in said career? All these things are important to consider. Freshmen and Sophomores should start thinking about what they plan on doing after finishing up high school. Juniors and Seniors should start thinking about this too, and begin planning ways to start the career that they feel is the best fit for them.
