This edition, we proudly recognize an educator who embodies the spirit of inspiration, dedication, and commitment to student success; Mrs. Kerri Ault, our 2024-2025 Teacher of the Year! With 28 years of exemplary service at Austin High School, Mrs. Ault has not only transformed classrooms into vibrant learning environments but has also made a significant impact on the lives of countless students. “I hope my students remember me as someone who cared about them beyond their academics,” said Mrs. Ault. “and who wanted the best for them while also challenging them.”
Mrs. Ault attended the University of Texas in Austin from 1992-1997, and earned a Bachelors of Science in Speech Communication, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in English. She is certified in English and Speech. “When I was young, I used to pretend to be a teacher with my invisible students. Honestly, I have wanted to be in the classroom since elementary school. My love of words and stories made me want to teach English. My motivation has changed over the years…I still love learning about others’ experiences whether it be through fiction, memoirs, nonfiction, or poetry, but I’ve realized over the years how uniquely cool it is to be able to talk with and get to know teenagers. Austin High students are so unique and interesting; having the chance to share my passion for literature with them is the best!”
Known for her innovative teaching methods, engaging lesson plans, and supportive mindset, Mrs. Ault goes above and beyond to foster a love for learning in each student. Her ability to connect with young minds and encourage them to reach their full potential has earned her the admiration of peers, students, and parents alike. “To me, the most important piece of teaching English is helping students see themselves in what we read. I do on occasion share advice (I call them my ‘Oprah Moments’) and tell my students a lot of silly, random stories about my own life. I think it’s important to know that teachers are as human as anyone else and can empathize with students’ struggles, hopes, frustrations, and anxieties. No one can learn deeply if they don’t first feel safe; I hope sharing bits of advice and lessons I’ve learned makes my classroom a safe space.”
She’s taught English 1, Advanced English, On Ramps, and has been teaching AP English 4 and Link Crew since 2017 to now. She was the class sponsor for the class of 2004, and coached debate in 1997, as well softball and volleyball from 2004-2007. She has also been the English Department Chairperson for 6 years. “There are many memorable moments from my time here! Being surprised as Teacher of the Year during class with beautiful flowers by fellow educators who I admire so much is definitely a moment! Seeing ACS students in Marfa ride horses for the first time in their lives was amazing! And really every time a student shares a powerful thought during class discussion or has a ‘lightbulb moment’ where they finally understand a skill is a great moment for a teacher.”
Through her passion for teaching and dedication to the community, Mrs. Ault continues to inspire the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and writers. Congratulations, Mrs. Ault, on this well-deserved recognition!
