As the marching band starts heading toward the end of the season, many senior members are anticipating their futures. This is especially prominent for senior drum major Luke Bone.
Since his sophomore year, Luke has taken on the role of the conductor, leading the Austin High School Marching Band to many accomplishments. Starting out as a baritone player, Luke was offered the role of drum major his sophomore year, a position he embraced with an open heart and mind.
“When I first started being a drum major, I was a sophomore, and it really took a year to kind of learn how to be a leader in the band,” said Luke. “Having people teach me really helped me these last two years.”
Under his leadership, the band has not only improved their marching, but has also become a tight-knit team. Luke’s commitment has been important in creating a unique atmosphere within the band, and his peers describe him as approachable and dedicated.
Luke’s passion for Marching Band is clear. “I think music to me is just a way to express myself. I think I have so much fun conducting the band and I think that music, especially marching music, is a way to see how you can prepare a piece of music to the best of your ability and just see how amazing it can turn into.”
The Marching Band has received significant recognition during his time, performing at ACL, DisneyWorld, and even earning second place at the CapCity Marching Festival this year. Luke’s dedication to detail and determination have played a role in these achievements, leading the band not only as a drum major but also as a band member.
“He has done an exceptional job by leading the band, and being able to create a balance between soloist and the full ensemble,” said senior soloist Jack Herbert. “What makes him different from the other drum majors in the past is that he puts himself forward to be the best role model that he can be.”
Luke’s responsibilities go beyond that of conducting the Austin High Marching Band. He often helps with building props and organizing events to help the band participate in visiting schools to promote music education.
As Luke starts thinking about college next year, he reflects on his high school experience with appreciation. “ Being a drum major has taught me a lot of things. Mainly responsibility and how to help the band move through these setbacks and challenges and get back on the right path.
As the drum major leaves his mark on the field, The director of the band has his own thoughts. “I feel sad that Luke is leaving,” said the head band director Mr. Patenaude. “He’s been great the last couple of years. In the future I want him to find a fulfilling passion, where he can still do something with music for the rest of his life. A message for Luke is, keep your head up and stay focused on your goals.”
