At the beginning of 2nd and 6th Period, students are greeted by music from around the world and throughout time. Assistant Principal Steve Maddox is now responsible for making the announcements and has decided to put his own personal spin on the news, what he refers to as Maroon Radio.

“I had this idea that would be because we have KAHS which is sort of a TV show that’s gonna morph into a news programs and then mrs Salazar will be working on the videotaped announcements that students would do. So we already have a TV station and another video kind of station and we already have KAHS so I don’t wanna have call letters and confuse people, so I thought we’d have a radio station and it’s Maroon Radio, “Maddox said.

Maddox has been the exclusive DJ for the announcements since January of last year. He got his start when other administrators asked him to help them out or take their announcements for the day. After a while, Maddox ended up just doing all of them. He recently had the epiphany to play music to the school that he thinks has a message and will inspire students in the mornings.

Instead of asking students to rise for the pledges, Maddox now says, “Let’s take care of business.”

“It’s a nod to making the people in the capital happy that we have to say that every single day, and then that other business would be the announcements that get sent to me from either students or teachers,” Maddox said.

He also encourages students and teachers to email announcements and song requests to [email protected].

“It’s good, but sound quality is a big problem and some of the songs drag on a bit much, but other than that it’s a nice idea.” Duncan Tschoepe said.

Maddox has also stated if he keeps getting positive feedback from students and teachers, he will continue to do the announcements as is, but is ready for any feedback to help the announcements go smoother.
