I realized it while working on a yearbook spread in eighth grade. The photos and small amount of text in front of me just wasn’t enough. The copy was a few sentences long and all it captured was a moment. What about the words that could represent a bigger issue, a movement, a person’s success story? Our middle school did not have a newspaper class so the idea didn’t really hit me until I began signing up for my high school courses. Who knew over four years later I’d be on my way to study journalism at the college level.

Being a part of this staff has without a doubt been a huge factor in the person I am today. From the countless hours spent from 8 a.m. on a late start day to after school on a Friday, it’s easy to say I have grown close to the staff year after year. As expected I hung closely to those in the same grade as me. I have made long lasting relationships over a couple of Einstein’s bagels and Thundercloud sandwiches.

Being a part of this organization has taught me a new level of independence. I have learned I am comfortable taking charge when I need to. Through the time spent helping students with their stories and training them for UIL competitions, I found my love for sharing my knowledge with others and have ultimately discovered a possible career path. It has been an unforgettable experience watching myself grow as well as the publications as a whole.

As of now only time can tell what opportunities or even troubles will fall in my path. There is not a doubt in my mind that every memory made in this room will be everlasting. As I begin packing my things to move into my dorm I surely won’t be forgetting my stack of Maroons and UIL medals.
